Mahan cultural center project

          Modelers:  SATABIM
         Location: Kerman
         Year:2021
      Area: —m2

This project is the cultural part of a larger project. The main task is designed in four parts. The first part of this project, after the design in the scale of its urban design, was the design of different uses. The first user design was the user of the cultural center, which was completed in 2021-2022 by the SATABIM team.
This project was carried out as a back-and-forth process between BIM and Energy. In this way, the sustainable design approach is included in it.

The project ahead is perhaps the most significant project done by the current team. We are very interested in this building because we also designed it. This project was remarkable for the employer and the present architects, who had exact and unique details. BIM modeling of this building dates back to mid-2021, after its design phase.

Project challenges

In this project, the concept design process had many back and forths. This happened because of the main slogan of this project, which refers to sustainability. Therefore, after going back and forth between the BIM process and the initial energy modeling process, we went to BIM modeling and completed the design of the project’s first phase. The SATABIM team, having experienced experts in the field of energy modeling and simulation, was able to produce a native process. In this way, converting and transferring BIM models to energy models was a relatively easy task.

In summary, we will refer to parts of designing energy models and their optimization after the BIM process.
Ventilation strategies: In this section, we examined passive and mechanical ventilation by referring to LEED V4.1 standards’ ventilation section. In the mentioned standard, the first strategy was picked after an examination. In this method, it’s said that we must examine Natural ventilation in non-domestic buildings CIBSE Applications Manual AM10 standards for further details. After looking over this standard and the related section on page 9, pictures 8-2, we looked at the following table. In the first step of the table, the heating load is examined, and it must be between 30 to 40 watts per square meter, and after modeling in DB software, we understand that it would not be under 40 watts per square meter.

After the last part, on the region, we will examine a new standard which, in the last part, was proven that we need a new standard. By reading Mixed mode ventilation CIBSE Applications Manual AM13: 2000 standards, we understand that we must follow the given path in the following picture. After answering the questions, we can evaluate whether it reached the mixed ventilation state. By looking over the given steps, we understand that we still need to reconsider the pointed actions. But all in all, we can say that we choose the correct path to reach the target. For now, we must optimize different points in the ventilation and, through an ongoing process, return to the following table

Solar chimney

A solar chimney is a type of passive solar heating and cooling system that can regulate the temperature of a building and provide ventilation. Solar chimneys can achieve energy-efficient building designs like a Trombe wall or solar wall. Having the idea that the center is located in Kerman and using vernacular architecture, one-way, and multiple ways wind catchers, the potential of using solar chimneys for creating suitable space is high and is considered sustainable and proinviroment.
